Virgin olive oil means that the olive oil that is produced exactly in the same way but with only one difference. The only difference is the free acidity level which is set to be max 2.0% for virgin olive oil whereas it is defined as 0.8% for extra virgin olive oil. Apart from this difference virgin olive oil is almost identical with extra virgin including the areas of use as well.
